Well known for his intriguing and appealing personality, Hamburng based artist stays true about how he prefers to stay anonymous. 1010 says he just want to do art and show the results, instead of sharing his private life online.
I started painting in 1994, so its not the first time I shifted. Coming from classic graffiti characters with their 15 standard expressions, the first bigger change in my works was to reduce the color palette and also to get rid of every kind of face, or easy to interpret pose… Over time, I also got rid of characters and my mane focus at the moment is perception. Basically as an artistic method I add or I take away. I check if the opposite of what I think is right or functions best might also work. If something works or something doesn´t work, I would just try the opposite to find out if it maybe works too? From there you just take the next step.
Mannheim created an amazing public gallery with its festival calles Stadt.Wand.Kunst., since 2013, the festival has been inviting well-known national and international artists every summer to produce lage-scale murals on façades. The reversal of monotony in the public space gave some diversity and color to the cityscape. 17 murals have been created in this city, since the beginning and has caused an enourmous appreciation.
We had the chance to talk to Alex Krziwanie, creative director at Montana-Cans, who told us that all artists invited to SWK have their roots and beginnings in the graffiti scene, that’s where this all started. “Without graffiti there would be probably not such a mural and street art movement like we see it today,” he assures.
Montana-Cans is Partner of the Festival since it’s beginning 2013 when Herakut was invited as the first participating artists. The project was initiated by the cultural Centre Alte Feuerwache Mannheim which plays an important role on the cultural landscape in the region. There was always a close Relation between the local graffiti and hip hop scene of Mannheim and the cultural center of Alte Feuerwache, Jams were regularly held and international artists and musicians brought to the city. When the idea of Standwandkunst was born the partners Alte Feuerwache as the organizers, Montana-Cans as sponsor and network partner plus a public housing association was the perfect match to make this project happen.
“We always focus on one artist after the other when inviting them to SWK, to make sure to provide them an adequate treatment and good time when they’re here to work at SWK. They should have a good time and be happy as we are when they leave,” says Sören Gerhold, director of Alte Feuerwache Mannheim.
The German Spraypaint manufacturer Montana-Cans is based in Heidelberg, close to Mannheim and has a close relation not only to the international art and graffiti movement also to the local scene. Montana-Cans supports the Stadt Wand kunst Festival not only with Spraypaint and Art materials but takes also direct action in the organization and provides access to its international artist network of reknown streetart and graffiti activists.
