“Debris | Macau” is the second instalment of an ongoing series of travelling solo exhibitions by Vhils. The first was presented last year in Hong Kong, following a year-long artist residency in the city with Hong Kong Contemporary Art (HOCA) Foundation, during which Vhils conducted research and explored his new visual and cultural surroundings. The concept of the series of exhibitions is to build upon the body of works presented in each city it travels to, thus creating a reflection on the similarities and differences between each local environment and its identity, and their connection with the globalised context.
For this second instalment, Vhils has created new works inspired by Macau that will be exhibited alongside works made last year in Hong Kong. These will comprise works in billboards, carved wooden doors, acid-etched metal plates, screen prints, styrofoam sculptures, neon compositions and video installations. Along with a mural piece carved inside the exhibition venue, Vhils is also working on another four carved murals in the streets of Macau as a tribute to the city’s residents.
